New Hospital Construction: 3 Ways to Keep the Hospital CEO Happy

By Cindy Juhas | July 23, 2014

New hospital construction is a costly venture that takes years to complete. When you are working on a hospital team, you want to be certain you are using the best approach in order to keep the hospital CEO happy. Using modern business approaches to new hospital construction will greatly ease the minds of your superiors as well as ease the pressures placed on your budget.

We agree with the ideas presented in an article by Hammes Company, a healthcare consulting company.

Here are three ways they suggested to keep your hospital CEO happy when undergoing new hospital construction:

1. Integrated Project Delivery

Integrated project delivery (IPD) will allow you to enhance your hospital's development efforts.  IPD integrates the people, practices, systems and business structures in order to facilitate the construction process.  By working as a team the three main groups involved in the construction process will be able to work more efficiently using streamlined communication and information sharing.

The three main players include the client, architect, and contractor, and within these three groups the communications required between consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers are also streamlined with clearer lines of communication and contacts.

When introduced from the very beginning of the process, IPD allows stronger and more respectful relationships to be forged so that the three groups work together sharing the same risks and rewards as a team, as opposed to being in opposition with each other.

This way challenges are measured and resolved as a team, instead of wasting time trying to place blame on one of the groups.  IPD starts at the early stages, which makes conventional project planning a group effort so that issues can be addressed and identified by all parties starting from the schematic design stage.

This inclusive approach allows for a holistic development of plans with the contractor involved to foresee any issues the architect might not spot and vice versa.  Through collaboration and more clear lines of communication, the building process becomes more cost effective with quicker delivery, less delays and operational excellence across the board.

2. Building Information Modeling

Building information modeling (BIM) uses software so that team members can remain completely involved and collaborate throughout the project. This software allows the team to follow along with all aspects of the building process by offering relevant information such as:

  • Geometry
  • Spatial relationships
  • Light analysis
  • Geographic information

CEO's love this approach as it allows them to examine and manipulate a complete virtual representation of their facility. This 3-D image of the facility allows team members to view the building and its operations in order to identify potential problems, discover opportunities and confirm proper space assignments before breaking ground.

This will reduce change orders and requirements to redesign elements of the facility that in turn will reduce costs.  BIM works in hand with IPD for excellent coordination and project management ensuring faster and more efficient work resulting in measurable cost savings.

3. Medical Equipment Planners and Distributors

A medical equipment planner in conjunction with a medical equipment distributor will handle all the steps related to equipment procurement, deployment, and implementation. They will work with you to find the equipment you need from their diverse scope of manufacturers and products so you can custom select what you need. They will alleviate the pressures and time-consuming process of extensive research usually required by a new facility. An equipment planning team will meet the needs of your facility from start to finish including:

  • Product selection
  • Quote Formulation
  • Management Of Product Flow
  • Tracking Reports
  • Logistics, Warehousing And Staging
  • Assembly
  • Labeling And Asset Tagging
  • Delivery Direct To The Room
  • In-Service Coordination
  • Product Damage/Malfunction
  • On Time Delivery Of Your Project
